For most visitors to the Franschhoek valley, wine tasting is high on the list of things to do. One question that often comes up is that of getting to and from the wine estates.
When planning a wine tour in Franschhoek, there are several options in this regard. By far the simplest choice is to simply drive to the estates. With over 40 wine farms in Franschhoek (within a 10km radius) there are no long distances to cover (remember to spit the wines you taste if driving back to town, in order to stay within the law). If you are feeling a bit more energetic, you could hire a bicycle and burn off some calories on your way to/from your tastings. For those wanting to take things at a slower pace, a few farms are within walking distance.
Guests that prefer to take an organised wine tour of Franschhoek can use one of the local tour operators. Half or full-day tours can be booked and you can either accept the pre-defined itinerary, or design your own and visit the estates of your choice.
There are also several options for wine tasting on horseback, with Steinmetz Arabians Franschhoek, Paradise Stables and Mont Rochelle all offering similar services and cater for all experience levels from novice riders to ex-jockeys. These tours usually last about four hours and visit three estates. Whilst this may sound like a long time, bear in mind that you would usually be in the saddle for about 45 minutes at a time, en-route to each estate.
